Special Precautions for High-Risk Groups: Pregnant Women

During pregnancy, a women's immune system is down-regulated to prevent rejection of the fetus as 'foreign tissue'. This down-regulation makes pregnant women more susceptible to some foodborne illnesses such as listeriosis and toxoplasmosis. A bulletin titled "Food Safety During Your Pregnancy" is available in either print or electronic versions at http://pubs.wsu.edu

Additional information about precautions for pregnant women regarding food are at the Food and Drug Administration web site http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/wh-preg.html
